Building Schools for the Future scheme brings legal opportunities

According to Sellick Partnership Legal, the Flagship Building Schools for the Future Programme (BSF) is bringing new opportunties for legal professionals within the public sector.
Earlier this year the National Audit Office reported that the programme was nearly £10 billion over budget as well as being 21 months behind schedule. Six months on, chairman of the Common Public Accounts Committe, Edward Leigh has commented: “It’s going to be a tall order to double the number of schools being procured and constructed."

However, Schools Minister, Vernon Coaker claims that the speed at which work is being undertaken has accelerated, and despite the economic climate, the majority of the project will be completed by 2020, with 20 financial institutions in the market and several PFI agreements closing this year.

Sellick Partnership Legal reports that the acceleration of the scheme will lead to an increase in demand for legal professionals across the country.  Sellick Partnership’s specialist consultant, Lucy Tootell has commented: “Since the BSF programme has picked up pace over recent months, we have noticed an increase in the demand for experienced contracts lawyers in legal authorities to support permanent employees - creating innovative and challenging opportunities within the sector.”
