Looking ahead to Unitary Status

04/02/2009

Sellick Partnership has previously commented on the impact the impending Unitary Status was having on the locum market.

To date, Sellick Partnership has recruited for a number of legal locum positions nationwide for authorities that have been unable to recruit on a permanent basis because of the freeze on recruitment.

Looking ahead to April, nine Unitary Councils will replace forty-four existing local authorities across Cheshire, Bedfordshire, Cornwall, Durham, Northumberland, Shropshire, and Wiltshire.

Sellick Partnership expects that this will have a positive effect for the locum market both from a client and candidate perspective.

With only two months to go, we are hearing from our clients that there are still many outstanding issues to be resolved; for example, the structure of newly created departments. Consultants in our legal division expect that it will take many months before teams settle into their new roles, creating opportunities for locums as they are called upon to provide support during this transitional period.

Looking ahead, work will be generated as the Unitary Councils work towards achieving long-term goals. For example, Central Bedfordshire plans to reshape children’s services and improve leisure facilities across the county whilst Shropshire Council plans to invest savings into public transport.

As permanent employees face these changes, Sellick Partnership has seen an increase in the number of people take the opportunity to review their career path and as such decide to make the move onto the locum market. As candidates enter the market with previous local authority experience the earning potential and flexibility can be very attractive. It is also a good time for unaffected authorities to attract experienced candidates to their own vacancies.

If you wish to find out more about the changes in your local area, or wish to discuss your own career path, our dedicated public sector consultants are happy to offer advice and assistance.
