Derby prides itself on its central location and highly skilled workforce. Along with excellent transport links, and the convenience of major routes on its doorstep –Derby and its surrounding area is becoming an increasingly popular location for investment opportunities.
Today, the services’ industry is the major economic driver for the area. The largest employer includes the East Midlands airport, which supports 9,100 full-time jobs each year, as well as the recently developed £250 million new city hospital, currently recruiting 6,000 employees and set to employ a further 1000 - providing numerous employment opportunities within the region.
The East Midlands is globally renowned for transport technology, including automotive, aerospace and rail, boasting world-class companies including Rolls Royce and Toyota. These corporations are major employers within the region, with the repairs of automotives still constituting a large fraction of Derby’s workforce.
World-class business and leading edge technologies make the area an increasingly attractive region for international trade and investment. Both the China and India Bureaus actively support and provide advice to small and medium business enterprises within the area, as well as the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) ‘High Growth’ scheme, that actively supports business growth and investment.
The University of Derby attracts 25,000 students to the city each year - bringing a wealth of knowledge to the region through young and talented professionals - many of whom remain in the area after graduating, adding to the pool of professional recruits.
Over the past ten years, the area has undergone a major facelift, with the construction of the controversial ‘Riverlights Project, ’ - a £100 million development scheme that includes hotels, bars and restaurants, retail outlets and apartments- providing new and exciting job opportunities.
A relatively recent addition to the city is Pride Park, the home ground to Derby County Football club. The city also boasts the recently opened QUAD visual gallery and cinema, over one hundred public parks and open spaces that fill the landscape, as well numerous historical buildings - including the striking Derby Cathedral.
