15 minutes with Principal Consultant Rayhaneh Tehrani

To celebrate our 15th year in business we sat down with Principal Consultant Rayhaneh Tehrani to discuss her career to date and her advice to anyone looking to secure a legal role in the public sector.

Rayhaneh Tehrani is a Principal Consultant specialising in securing high-calibre locum legal professionals for the public sector, recruiting to Local Authorities across the South East. Joining the business as a Resourcing Consultant in 2010 Rayhaneh quickly progressed and is now an integral senior member of the legal team working from our head office in central Manchester. Rayhaneh has established herself as a niche legal recruitment specialist and is now recognised as one of the most trusted and respected within her region. 

Why did you choose a career in recruitment?
“When I started my career there was no obvious path into recruitment and like many others, I fell into it. I studied law at the University of Manchester, but quickly realised I didn’t want to become a solicitor. A friend of mine was a solicitor turned recruiter and he introduced me to the idea of recruitment having had the same background as him. After looking into the sector I realised recruitment is very people focused which is what initially attracted me to the industry, and it also has an element of sales which I had some experience in. Legal recruitment also gave me the opportunity to make use the experience I gained from my qualifications, and put the skillsets I learned to good use.”

What do you love most about your current role?
“The most satisfying aspect of my role is having the opportunity to help people, working in partnership with my clients and candidates. I get the most satisfaction from helping my candidates develop their career, watching them grow with each placement, ensuring they get the most from my services and end up in a role that they really love.”

What has been the highlight of your career to date?
“My highlight has to be being recognised as the company’s top biller for the last three years. This achievement is recognised annually at our End of Financial Year Awards, and my three awards are still displayed at home.”

What recruitment trends do you foresee in 2017?
“That is a very difficult question as the recruitment sector is constantly changing. One current issue we are focusing on in particular at the moment is the impending tax changes that are due to take effect in April this year. We will of course find a way to overcome any issues this might arise, but it is going to be an enormous change for the public sector team and contractors in the coming year.

“Brexit may also have an impact but we are currently unclear on how large or small this may be. We are starting to see a rise in the number of Commercial Lawyer roles coming through which may be something to do with organisations preparing for any changes that may happen such as EU procurement rules.”

What advice would you give to anyone seeking roles in the legal sector today?
“To be a successful, legal candidates must tailor their CV to suit a specific role, showcasing their relevant skills and their ability to do that role in black and white. Additionally I would say it is essential to always carry out research on the organisation before an interview, keep up-to-date with changes in the law and make sure you attend networking events to give yourself the breadth of knowledge and the contacts and connections needed to succeed.”

How does it feel to be shortlisted for this years’ Talent and Recruitment Professional of the Year at the 2017 Made in Manchester Awards?
“I feel really honoured that I been chosen from all the entries that were submitted this year, and I am extremely grateful to the management and marketing team at Sellick Partnership for putting me forward for it. It is always nice to be  recognised by your peers, and to receive recognition for the hard work I have been putting in over the past 7 years makes it even more worthwhile.”

What does the future hold for you and your career?
“I see my future very much with Sellick Partnership. I want to continue developing my patch and strengthening my position in the market. I also want to strengthen my management skills, helping members of the team create and build upon new opportunities within the legal recruitment sector. “

What is your advice for anyone looking to carve a successful career in recruitment?
“One thing that so many recruiters underestimate is the power of networking. Attending industry events is extremely important and will really help develop relationships with candidates and clients, especially when you are first setting up your own patch and desk. It is also imperative to stay up-to-date with any industry specific changes allowing you to stay at the forefront of any developments which might affect how and what you recruit to.

“You need to be self-motivated and driven to succeed in recruitment and you have to be prepared to work hard. Recruitment is by no means an easy profession to excel in, and you only get out of it what you put in. It is a very satisfying career, and every single day you have the ability to change people’s lives, so if like me you care about people and want to work with people then recruitment could be the perfect career choice. It is hard work however nothing beats the thrill of placing a candidate in their dream job. When the client is happy to have secured a talented person you have found you can walk away feeling a sense of satisfaction and achievement. The training development and career opportunities in recruitment are endless which makes it a very attractive career choice for someone driven to succeed.”
