Every year the Christmas break seems to provide an optimum time for people to reflect on the year that has just passed and allow people to give some thought to the year ahead. Unsurprisingly one of the more prominent topics people reflect on is their career.

It is important to use this down time to take stock in some way, whether you are setting career goals, or just keeping track of existing objectives targets for the year ahead. The key is ensuring that your career goals have purpose, and will motivate you to work towards them.

Your objectives may not necessarily be focused on moving to a new company or changing your role, they could be on based on passing your exams or learning new skills. Regardless of what your goals may be, it is always useful to give yourself some timescales and targets to work towards.

If you are contemplating a move away from your current role, there are a few things to consider beforehand. One piece of advice we always offer candidates is to be considered and specific in your search.

You have to ensure that your CV (and/or application) is tailored to each individual role and organisation, use the job description and research the company and their values thoroughly to do this. Make sure you are doing all you can to set yourself apart from the completion and demonstrate where you can add value.

Tailoring your CV to each role, may take you a little longer but will give you a much better chance of success and will demonstrate your specific interest to each potential employer.
