Confidence in the legal sector is riding high and so the war for talent returns…

A recent article in the Law Society Gazette highlighted a study which showed that law firms are feeling more confident about their business prospects than at any time since at least the mid-1990s. Some 99% of practices polled by accountants Smith & Williamson have a positive outlook for the year ahead, exceeding the previous high of 96% in 2006, just before the economy crashed. Just over half (51%) of firms are planning to increase the range of services they offer in the next 12 months; 65% are proposing to grow their marketing spend; and 79% plan to increase investment in I.T. So how many are looking to hire?

Well similarly this study mirrors the latest results from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), who’s latest year-on-year trends show a 12% increase in legal vacancies compared to this time last year and Sellick Partnership’s own results show a 43% increase in the number of vacancies being handled by our legal team. So it seems that the confidence firmly returning to the legal community and the above appetite for growth has led to a sharp increase in permanent and interim recruitment across the UK.

Commercial and residential property in particular continues to see the greatest demand for lawyers at all levels which in turn has created additional openings and opportunities in associated disciplines of planning, housing and construction. As the wider UK economic recovery continues, other core practice areas such as corporate, banking, commercial, and litigation remain buoyant with firms ensuring they go over and above on pay and benefits to attract and retain the best talent. So perhaps it’s the right time for you to be looking to further your career.

It seems that your competition is already ready to pounce for the right opportunity with 45% of lawyers updating their LinkedIn profile and 44% updating their CV in the last 12 months. At Sellick Partnership we can assist you with both of these as well as getting you in front of a number of the top law firms nationwide.
