When choosing your career, think carefully where you want to be based. The landscape of a city can be pivotal in finding the right opportunity. As a Senior Consultant within Sellick Partnership, my role here is to recruit into the legal Yorkshire market for private practice organisations on a permanent basis. Being a Yorkshire lass myself I love Leeds and everything that it offers. Looking out from my office window you can see that the Leeds skyline is filled with cranes as more major shopping destinations appear. Leeds is a major commercial centre in its own right and you can see a new found confidence sweeping across most sectors including the legal industry.

Currently Leeds houses a number of the regional heavyweights, which is also known as the ‘Big Six’ – Addleshaw Goddard, DLA Piper, Eversheds LLP, Squires Patton Bogg, Pinsent Masons and Walker Morris. The ‘Big Six’ have continued to flourish in an ever competitive marketplace, and we are now seeing a few medium-sized firms such as Lupton Fawcett, Gordons and Clarion who are making their presence felt.

The financial recovery is on the horizon and as a business we have experienced a healthy increase in the need for Commercial Property Solicitors. This is partly due to institutional investment into the private rented sector and also the blossoming secondary debt market, which shows strength in Leeds. There is no shortage of SMEs in Leeds and the Legal 500 points to ‘an undeniable rise in corporate transactions’. This is evident when speaking with potential clients, as again the need for experienced Corporate Solicitors has been noted.

Leeds is an exciting place to be, with lots going on with regards to business mergers and acquisitions, up and coming talent within the market and the cultural vibe of Leeds. You need to experience a weekend in Leeds to appreciate what it has to offer. With a central theatre, a new shopping centre (Trinity) and many bars/ pubs opening, Leeds is very cosmopolitan and friendly place to be.
