Newly Qualified ACAs...why Liverpool needs you!

Earlier in the year my colleague Martin Parr wrote an article aptly titled ‘So you've qualified, now what?’ which insightfully highlighted the bright prospects of an accounting career post-qualification. Looking at this more specifically, I would be keen to highlight not what you can do post-qualifying, but why qualified ACAs should make the move out of Practice and into the exciting world of industry.

To gain a place to study ACA at a top tier Practice in the first instance is an achievement in itself. Their firms hold a rigorous recruitment process where competition is fierce and only the brightest and highest calibre candidates are offered the chance to join and study for their ACA qualification. Already, then, candidates who have made it on to an ACA training scheme are clearly diligent and hard-working, making them a clear asset to any employer. But three years after studying and qualifying, it is time for these ACAs to then share their talent and add value to another company. Liverpool is currently thriving economically, and in order to maintain this growth, the longest standing names in Liverpool commerce need quality finance candidates to develop their companies.

Anyone working within accountancy will know that a strong finance department is the backbone of a company. In the words of Mike Hoyle, Sellick Partnership’s very own Financial Controller and ironically an ACA, “a good or bad finance team can be the difference between success and failure of the company as it moves through a growth phase”. A finance team can hold responsibility for whether to open a new office, to recruit new staff, open a new division, what staff benefits to provide, new contracts to tender for and which contracts to cease (duties that go way beyond simply audit). Without a well-trained accountant overseeing these duties, a good company becomes an average one.

There are increasing fears amongst local businesses that the finance function will be outsourced to London where there is a larger talent pool and ACAs looking for their first time move from Practice are easier to come by. Don't let this be the case! Liverpool and other northern cities are consistently being chosen as the destination for both headquarters and regional offices for more and more growing companies, but in a market that is candidate short, finance functions may be forced to the capital if we don't maintain good talent regionally.

If you are a qualified ACA looking for your first move out of Practice, I urge you to get in touch for a further discussion – it’s for the good of your local economy!
