What does it mean to be the best recruitment company in Manchester?

As a business owner it is usual to face challenges on a regular basis. But it is moments of achievement and recognition, which really make overcoming those challenges worth it.

We recently learnt that we had been nominated in the City of Manchester Business Awards (COMBA) as Best Recruitment Company. Not only was this fantastic news as it was the second year in a row that we had been nominated, but for the second time we had been nominated by a member of our business community.

This tells me that whilst we mustn't rest on our laurels, we're clearly getting some things right.

Over the past 13 years we have built strong relationships with businesses in Manchester, which has a vibrant professional services sector, which over the last decade has grown to be the biggest in the UK outside of London. Our understanding of how 'things get done' in this region, as well as our commitment to adding value wherever possible means that we are a well-established part of the Manchester business community. In addition we work closely with local authorities and NHS organisations which has secured us our position as market leaders in the provision of finance and legal professionals to the public sector.

We work with Manchester Chambers to provide continued learning training for solicitors in the local area, we attend local business events and contribute in round tables on building a 'Northern Powerhouse' offering updates on market trends through our networks and organise annual events like the Manchester Professional's cricket and football leagues, which raise money for local charities and also offer employees in the local area a chance to relax with colleagues and network with peers.

Financially we're on course for another great year, and along with our offices in Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Derby and Stoke, we're opening our first base in London this year, but those external activities are only half of the story when it comes to understanding our success so far.

When I established Sellick Partnership in 2002, my ambition was of course to grow a successful business, but also to turn the perception of what a recruitment consultant does on its head. I love being a recruiter and I wouldn't be happy in any other career, but I hated the idea that working in recruitment means that you're a 'lone wolf'. My vision was to create an environment where the best talent could flourish, but also one of collaboration. There is no veil of secrecy at Sellick Partnership, we share candidates and roles - which ultimately means that we can serve our clients better.

We employ over 40 people in Manchester and awards like Investors in People Silver and ISO:9001 demonstrate our commitment to our teams, who in turn live and breathe the vision and the values of the business. Our culture is a combination of professionalism and good humour, our offices buzz with as consultants hit the phone or run meetings, and no matter what time of day you can see that the teams are engaged and keen to get the job done well.

We recently introduced a flexible working scheme, can boost staff turnover below the national average of 15% and encourage work-life balance for our employees which ensures that our people can manage a career and family life - all of which see us ahead of the game within our sector.

I'm really proud to see how many of our employees who started in junior positions have gone on to become 'top biller' or take on extra responsibility at management or senior management level. Several have been pivotal in setting up new offices and are successfully leading our branches in Liverpool and Leeds. Our open door policy and flat business structure sees board members working alongside their teams, and entrepreneurship and ambition are key traits among all our employees.

But we aren't finished, we want to be the best recruitment business in the UK. This means developing our offices, investing more in our people, listening to feedback - internal and external - and looking for new ways to support the careers of our candidates and our employees.

Of course there are no guarantees that we will win this award, the criteria for the organisers might be different to what I think. But if you would like to vote for Sellick Partnership at the COMBA awards you can do so here…
