Basic information 

  • Salary bracket: £40,000 to £55,000 (perm), or £30 to £40 per hour (temp/locum), depending on location and experience.
  • Contract basis: Locum and permanent roles.
  • Job location: Across the UK – including Manchester, Midlands, East Midlands, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool and London.
  • Working hours: full or part time

Key responsibilities of a childcare solicitor

In the majority of cases, the typical workload of a childcare solicitor will involve:

  • Providing a service of legal advice and practice to either a public or private organisation, dependent on the job role. This could include child protection, social care, immigration and education work, including special educational needs.
  • Legal research and advice. 
  • Representing the local authority in a professional manner, and building/developing successful relationships.
  • Carrying a substantial workload – usually in the region of 10 to 12 public care cases, plus around five private child cases
  • Meeting deadlines 
  • Writing clear and concise reports 
  • Delivering presentations 
  • Working as part of a team, as well as independently 
  • Handling a wide variety of cases spanning a number of challenging and sensitive areas, such as neglect, abuse or adoption 
  • Undertaking advocacy, and instructing counsel where necessary 
  • Attending public law and legal planning meetings 

What skills do you need to be a childcare solicitor? 

The experience required to enter into a role as a childcare solicitor is dependent on the type of organisation, and the qualifications a candidate has. Many firms offer training that can be completed while you are in the role.

  • Communicating well, both orally and in writing 
  • Problem solving
  • Analytical skills
Experience needed to be a childcare solicitor
  • Qualified solicitor.
  • Proven experience as a childcare solicitor, or barrister 
  • Experience of managing a caseload of public cases under minimum supervision.
  • Experience of conducting advocacy (where applicable)
  • Any previous experience of attending public law outline of legal planning meetings would be highly beneficial. 

Qualifications needed to be a childcare solicitor

The qualifications required to be a childcare solicitor will depend on the organisation that is hiring, and the specific duties the candidate will be expected to carry out. Commonly, candidates will become a solicitor through studying law at university, before taking the Legal Practice Course (LPC). However, this is not restricted to all legal professionals, some may study a non-law degree, then take the Common Professional Examination, or the Graduate Diploma in Law conversion course before doing the LPC. 

Alternatively you would need to complete a training contract to qualify as a solicitor or qualify as a legal executive through the Cilex route.
