Commercial financial accountant jobs

Commercial accounting is an integral part of most business functions. A commercial accountant will work with senior members of a business in ensuring information is relayed to the correct stakeholders at the correct time. Basic information

  • Salary bracket: £40,000 to £50,000.
  • Contract basis: contract and permanent roles available.
  • Job location: across the UK – including Manchester, Midlands, East Midlands, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool and London. 
  • Working hours: full-time.

Key responsibilities of a commercial accountant
Responsibilities of a commercial accountant will typically involve: 

  • Supporting the chief financial officer where appropriate and presenting information and advising on key financial information to senior stakeholders
  • Preparing month end management accounts, including profit and loss
  • Cost centre analysis and business partnering support to cost centre managers
  • Budgets and forecasting including creation of new models 
  • Production of Sales and Margin reports and analytical review of variances
  • Supporting in the creation and maintenance of financial models such as accruals and prepayments models
  • Review of figures month-on-month for completeness, performance and variance analysis
  • Production of cost centre reports
  • Providing ad-hoc analysis and reporting
Qualifications needed to be a commercial accountant
While entry into the profession without a degree is possible, Finance and Accountancy roles are incredibly competitive. Therefore, those with a degree usually have a competitive edge over other candidates.

In addition all candidates must be fully qualified (CIMA, ACCA, ACA or equivalent) with a strong academic track-record.

Experience needed to be a commercial accountant
The role of a commercial accountant would be best suited to a newly-qualified professional who is either in a management accounting role in industry or in an accounting practice and seeking their first move into industry. 

Additional experience should usually include:
  • Excellent IT skills including strong Microsoft Excel skills (VBA would be an advantage.
  • Strong ERP knowledge on required systems
  • Be comfortable with strategy creation to help drive the business forward
  • Be able to build and maintain risk management procedures
  • Experience in all aspects of financial planning 
  • Take control of financial modelling for the business
  • Stakeholder management

Career progression of a commercial accountant
There are various opportunities to progress as a commercial accountant. For example they could take a route to become a Commercial Finance Manager or FBP.
