A commercial property solicitor provides services for businesses, developers and investors regarding all aspects of commercial property transactions, including development, investment, secured lending, landlord and tenant, agricultural and residential. 

Basic information 

  • Salary bracket: £50,000 to £55,000. 
  • Contract basis: Locum and permanent roles. 
  • Job location: Nationwide.
  • Working hours: Full or part-time.

Key responsibilities
In the majority of cases, the typical workload of a commercial property solicitor will involve:

  • Carrying a substantial caseload
  • Leases and licenses
  • Sales and acquisitions
  • Landlord and tenant
  • Meeting deadlines
  • Making important decisions
  • Communicating well, both orally and in writing
  • Writing clear and concise reports
  • Delivering presentations
  • Working as part of a team, as well as independently
  • Solving a variety of problems
  • Being analytical
  • Undertaking advocacy, and/or instructing counsel where necessary
Experience 
The experience required to become a commercial property solicitor is dependent on the organisation that is hiring. Many will be strict with the requirements they place in a jobs advert, whereas others are more flexible when it comes to a candidate’s employment history. 

Qualifications 
The qualifications required also depend on the organisation that is hiring, as well as the specific duties the candidate will be expected to carry out. In many cases, candidates will become a solicitor through studying law at university, before undertaking the Legal Practice Course (LPC). However, this is not restricted to all legal professionals, and many study a non-law degree before undertaking the Common Professional Examination or the Graduate Diploma in Law conversion course before taking the LPC.

Working hours/benefits 
Many organisations offer flexible working opportunities, and remote working is also becoming increasingly popular. Many public sector organisations, including local authorities, now offer flexible working. Generally, core hours fall between the hours of 10:00 - 12:00 and 14:00 - 16:00 and while property solicitors must be present during these times, they can often work flexibly in order to maximise their work/life balance.
