Financial analyst jobs

Data analysts collect, process and perform statistical analyses of data. Data analysts must be able to communicate well and must be highly organised and meticulous with detail. A career as a Data Analyst will suit candidates that are highly analytical, have strong mathematical skills, and are curious and inquisitive. Data Analyst roles are usually office-based and will involve working with complex systems and processes, working across various areas that include business intelligence, sales and finance.

Basic information 

  • Salary bracket: £25-£50K plus depending on experience and organisation
  • Contract basis: contract and permanent roles available
  • Job location: across the UK – including North West, Midlands, East Midlands, North East, Leeds, Liverpool and London.
  • Working hours: full-time

Key responsibilities of a Data Analyst
Responsibilities of a Data analyst will typically involve:

  • Working with IT teams and senior management to determine organisational goals
  • Manipulate, analyse and interpret complex data sets relating to the employer's business
  • Collect and interpret key data
  • Thoroughly check data for irregularities and discard irrelevant information
  • Analyse and interpret results using standard statistical tools and techniques
  • Uncover and report on trends, correlations and patterns within data 
  • Identify new opportunities for process improvement
  • Provide concise data reports and clear data visualisations for management
  • Design, creation and maintenance of relational databases and data systems


Qualifications needed to be a Data Analyst
Most candidates for entry-level roles will be required to have a bachelor’s degree in math, statistics computer science, information management, finance or economics. All of these subjects place a heavy emphasis on statistical and analytical skills.

It is however possible to enter this career without a degree. Data analyst apprenticeships are available with a range of employers. To be considered onto an apprenticeship or training programme you will often need A levels (or equivalent).

Experience needed to be a Data Analyst

  • Database design 
  • Experience of data analysis tools including Excel and MS Access
  • Strong data modelling, data cleansing, and data enrichment techniques
  • Proficient in statistical methodologies and data analysis techniques
  • Producing clear graphical representations and visuals
  • Depending on field analysts may be required to use business intelligence and analytics platforms that include: Tableau, QlikView, Crystal Reports, D3, Alteryx
  • Depending on the field, certification may be required

Career progression of a Data Analyst
Data analysist are in high demand across all sectors, and as a result skilled analysts will have excellent career prospects. 

To climb the career ladder or transition to the role of a data scientist, you will probably be required to earn a master’s degree or graduate certificate in a similar field.

Working hours/benefits of a Data Analyst

Data analyst positions are usually salaried with full-time working hours between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. 

Senior data analyst roles can become more flexible, offering candidates a greater work/life balance and allowing for remote working or commuting on a more flexible schedule.
