Sellick Partnership is delighted to be recruiting an Assistant Director of Law (Litigation and Governance) at a reputable council within the Home Counties on a permanent basis.

This is a great opportunity to join a highly regarded and established Legal team in an exciting local Council environment that prides itself on the first class service it offers.

The council are seeking an Assistant Director to overlook the contentious teams such as Dispute Resolution, Childcare, Adults, and Education etc but to also deputise for the Head of Legal in his absence.

As the Assistant Director you will be taking over the reins at an exciting and crucial time of development for the council's Litigation team but also dealing with neighbouring councils.

The successful Assistant Director will:

  • Shape the development of the teams within this section which comprises of various Litigation areas.

  • Contribute to the overall strategic management and development of the delivery of high quality, cost effective legal services to the Council, its members and officers.

  • Be the lead lawyer on high profile matters involving the Council and other clients within the remit of the Litigation and Governance Group.

  • Provide day to day management of the Litigation and Governance Law Group to deliver high quality, cost effective legal services.

  • Deputise for the Director of Law & Governance and to act as the Deputy Monitoring Officer

  • Represent and promote Legal Services on corporate Boards and Groups on matters relating to the remit of the Litigation and Governance Law Group or as directed by the Director of Law & Governance.

  • To be the client relationship manager for the Litigation and Governance Law Group in respect of all client departments.

This position will be an outward facing role whereby you will be liaising and speaking with boroughs and District councils within the area to collaborate with their Litigation departments.

As a successful Assistant Director of Legal you will:

  • Be qualified to practise as a Solicitor or equivalent
  • Have an in depth and up-to-date knowledge of Litigation matters ideally Civil/Criminal litigation
  • Be able to promote strong collaboration working relations with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Have experience in managing a team or looking to take the next step up to management
  • Possesses Governance/Monitoring officer experience
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

In return, the successful Assistant Director will receive:

  • Hours can be worked on a hybrid and flexible basis, including home working opportunities such as 3 days from home and 2 days in the office
  • The council recognise the importance of work-life balance and can offer a range of flexible working patterns
  • 25 days holiday, increasing to 30 days in line with continuous 5 years' service, plus bank holidays
  • Local Government Pension Scheme - up to 20% employers contribution

Ideally the Assistant Director will have previous experience working at an Assistant Director level or Senior/Team Leader/Head of department level at a Borough, District, Unitary level is a prerequisite for this position. The Council are willing to train and support any ambitious individuals who are looking to take the next step up in their career.
