An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Director of Legal & Governance

to join an innovative Local Authority council.

As Assistant Director of Legal & Governance you will join the Council's Senior Management Team at a pivotal time where lots of ambitious regeneration and innovation is occurring in the local area.

You will report directly in to the Chief Executive and you will lead, manage and modernise the Legal team. The team will​ undertake an internal transformation, building on​ what is already a great, effective team, to ensure the delivery of high quality and cost-effective services throughout the organisation.

As Assistant Director of Legal & Governance, you will champion ​ innovation, creativity, trust and probity, directing teams to ensure that its strategies, procedures and activities are developed and delivered to meet the needs of the Council Officers, Members and Communities.

You will demonstrate managerial leadership values and provide positive leadership and inspiration whilst managing the Legal Services, Category Management, Elections and Members' Services and Democratic Services.

You will ensure that the Council performs its duties and functions in fulfilment of its statutory obligations by leading as the Monitoring Officers for two Councils and its Committees. You will review their constitutions, therefore a thorough understanding and background within a Monitoring Officer/ Senior Risk Officer capacity is essential.

As Assistant Director of Legal & Governance you will be able to demonstrate proven experience in leadership and management of Legal Services within a Local Government setting.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister
  • Experience working within a Local Government setting
  • Experience managing and modernising teams (directly)
  • Monitoring Officer experience
