London OR Bristol (Hybrid working, 2 days in the office per week)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a paralegal to join a Central Government regulatory body on a permanent basis. The aim of the Paralegal role is to provide support for a broad range of legal matters relevant to the functions of the organisation and its internal corporate activities. Key responsibilities include undertaking legal research and supporting the lawyers in providing legal advice to colleagues within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting lawyers in formulating legal advice for the organisation, including through contributing own thoughts and legal analysis
  • Working with legal administrators to support the legal team · Liaising with colleagues in other directorates as required
  • Liaising with colleagues in other directorates as required
  • Supporting the legal team, including through research and document reviews
  • Assisting the team in:
    • the production of internal guidance documents on key legal and regulatory issues
    • commissioning external legal support (including Counsel)

Required skills:

ESSENTIAL

  • Legal Degree (or equivalent conversion course)
  • Experience of many of the relevant legal practice areas, gained through paid practical experience in an equivalent role.

  • Excellent legal research skills
  • Ability to analyse caselaw and identify complex legal issues

  • Experience in drafting legal memos

  • A keen interest in public law
  • Understanding of the needs of an in-house legal team, and able to proactively find solutions to support the team

  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills

DESIRABLE:

  • Completed relevant postgraduate legal training (for example, the Legal Practice Course, Solicitors Qualifying Examinations 1 and 2, or vocational component of Bar training such as the Bar Practice Course)

  • Knowledge and understanding of judicial review proceedings and statutory appeals in a regulated sector.
  • Knowledge of public law issues relevant to a regulatory body, including principles relating to consultation.
