An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Property Lawyer to join a well-regarded Central London local authority as the Chief Solicitor and Head of Development and Property Law on an interim part-time basis.

This forward thinking and prestigious organisation boasts a culture of co-operative and integrated working and are flexible with home working. The local authority is looking for a commercially minded and ambitious Lawyer for 3 days per week (days flexible) to cover maternity leave.

To assume the role of Interim Chief Lawyer and Head of Property Law, you will need to have had previous experience of managing a team of Property Lawyers and of advising on major property development projects in a public authority.

This role will bring challenge, autonomy, opportunity and is highly rewarding. You will be managing 2 direct reports and 18 indirect reports, and you will also be leading on high-value, complex projects in property and regeneration. You will be instrumental in delivering the vision for the area to be an unrivalled borough of choice and aspiration.

The successful part-time Chief Lawyer and Head of Development and Property Law will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Be responsible for the provision of property law and major development project advice to the Council;
  • Deputise for the Director of Law;
  • Advise on the Council's Constitution, decision making and other corporate governance matters and processes;
  • Attend and advise at Cabinet, Committee and other Member meetings;
  • Ensure that senior officers are supported in their ambition to deliver major development or complex projects;
  • Assist in ensuring that the trading accounts of the Service are properly managed;
  • Provide strategic leadership to the staff in the teams responsible to this post including ensuring on-going staff development;
  • Develop the capacity and capabilities of the Service's teams to deliver the best mix of external and internal legal advice;
  • Appoint and oversee the input of counsel and external specialist legal advisers as required, and to handle specific projects and cases.
