Locum to Permanent Opportunity

A busy local authority in the South East are looking for a Data Protection Officer to join their team on a locum basis for an initial 3-6 months.

As a Data Protection Officer you will predominately be advising on DPIA's and reviewing the council's processes. As Data Protection Officer you will also undertake the following duties:

  • To assist the DPO in fulfilling their statutory duties as set out in Article 39 of the GDPR, to include:
    • to inform and advise the Council directorates about their obligations to comply with the GDPR and other data protection laws;
    • to monitor compliance with the GDPR and other data protection laws, and with data protection policies, raising awareness of data protection issues, training staff and conducting internal audits;
    • A key and central part of the role will be to advise on, and to monitor, data protection impact assessments, in accordance with the Council's policies and procedures, making formal recommendations to the DPO to support his statutory role
  • You will be a key member of the Legal and Governance team, having responsibilities for working with people at all levels of the organisation to improve awareness of and compliance with all matters relating to data protection, primarily through your interaction with them on DPIA's
  • You will be exposed to a high level of sensitive information and have a wide-ranging remit in terms of subject matter and influence
  • It is essential that you have an in- depth knowledge of information-related legislation and awareness of future developments in such areas and extensive practical data protection and information management experience
  • A professional information governance qualification is highly desirable as is experience of working in local government
  • You will also possess a clear understanding of the 'internal customer' and have the ability to prioritise, solve problems and make decisions using your own initiative whilst maintaining a high level of good service, planning and co-ordination skills
  • You will be able to provide risk-based advice, and have good experience of providing practical outcome's based advice where needed
  • You will be expected to work as part of a larger team and share all share knowledge, process improvements and support members of the team
  • There will be an opportunity to work alongside senior colleagues to review the existing DPIA process the Council has in place and to recommend suggestions for improvement and then implementation

As Data Protection Officer you will need the following experience:

  • Practical experience in Data Protection Officer within a Local Government setting
  • Hold relevant Data Protection/ GDPR qualifications
