An exciting opportunity has arisen within a large organisation based in Kent, looking for an enthusiastic individual who can hit the ground running within this role and bring exciting ideas and a wealth of experience to the table, does this sound like you?


Key responsibilities of the role:

  • To provide a specialist, enforcement, renewal and advisory service to fulfil statutory and other obligations to ensure properties in the private sector comply with national standards - ensuring homes are healthy, safe and warm. This will involve inspecting homes in response to requests for service from persons, in particular private sector tenants, relating to residential accommodation, and either providing advice or taking necessary action to remedy the situation
  • You will have regular contact with landlords, advice organisations e.g. CAB, and other council teams and will need to be able to explain the Council's policies, procedures, and national legislation to ensure all stakeholders are aware of their rights and responsibilities with regards to improving housing standards
  • The post holder will maintain a range of internal and external contacts in the provision of services and projects. Internally there will be daily contact with the Team Leader and other team members and more generally with Officers within the wider Strategic Housing Service
  • This post will assist in the development and maintenance of multi-directorate and multi-agency working and contact will involve liaison with owners, landlords, Housing Associations and legal advisers

Essential requirements of the role:

  • Must be HHSRS certified
  • An understanding of local authority funding and financial measures
  • Demonstrable ability to carry out a range of tasks and understand the procedures associated with them. Ability to use equipment provided and possess the written and numerical skills needed to compile straightforward reports, correspondence, calculations, carry out assessments
  • Demonstrable experience in MS office applications
  • Full driving licence (valid for driving within the UK) and access to own transport for work purposes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to deal with some work-related pressure, for example from deadlines, interruptions or conflicting demands
  • Can demonstrate dexterity, co-ordination or sensory skills, where there is some demand for precision in the use of these skills, for example driving and/or the general use of a computer during the working day
  • Demonstrable ability to use own judgement and creativity to assess situations, solve straightforward problems and adapts to new ways of working (20% weighting)
  • Demonstrable ability to use written and oral communication skills to present varied information in an understandable way to a range of audiences (15% weighting)
  • Demonstrable ability to work within defined procedures and to work independently, using initiative to deal with straightforward situations, referring to supervisor/line manager for unusual or difficult problems
  • Demonstrable ability to carry out tasks and/or advise on internal procedures, which impact on the health and well-being of people
  • Demonstrable ability to explain straightforward tasks to others, where required
  • Demonstrable experience of providing general information, advice and guidance on internal procedures relating to finance
  • Commitment to equality and diversity, accepting differences and treating everyone fairly

Desirable requirements of the role:

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in HHSRS standards combined with awareness of good practice and innovation
  • Knowledge of housing construction, housing defects and remedial works
  • A suitable qualification in housing, environmental health, building surveying or equivalent practical experience or property based qualification
  • Certified competency in the Housing Health and Safety Rating System
