Contract: 3 months

Rate: Equivalent to £46,000 pa

London based - remote working

An excellent opportunity has arisen for three Legal Officers to join a registered trade union to provide legal advice and representation to members in regulatory law proceedings. This is on an initial 3 month contract on a rate equivalent to £46,000 pa.

The Legal Officer will have:

  • Legal Practice Course or equivalent
  • Expert knowledge of either regulatory, criminal, employment, public law or civil litigation
  • Experience of managing a large case load of approximately between 50-100 cases (depending on specialism) with supervision and taking direction accordingly
  • The ability to advise and represent members on all aspects of regulatory law
  • The ability to draft legal pleadings and other documents

Main duties and responsibilities of the Legal Officer:

  • To represent members in respect of regulatory proceedings, including charges of alleged professional conduct and any appeals in the High Court
  • To undertake advocacy (where applicable) and occasionally instruct advocates in respect of regulatory proceedings, including charges of alleged professional misconduct
  • To manage a caseload and, in conjunction with lawyers and support staff within the department
  • To refer cases of members charged with criminal offences to private agent solicitors, and to manage those files as may be necessary
  • To advise and support members, Officers and Stewards on all issues of regulatory law, together with other aspects of the law, in particular professional conduct matters
  • To ensure the delivery of quality and cost effective legal services to members, demonstrating the efficient use of resources, in accordance with the terms of membership contract, professional standards and departmental strategic objectives
  • To be responsible for keeping up to date developing practices in accordance with the requirements of the Law Society or Bar Council or Institute of Legal Executives,
  • To undertake all tasks reasonably requested of an individual exercising such a position within the organisation, including the delivery of training sessions within the wider team or to external organisations on aspects of regulatory law and other areas of law as required
  • To contribute to the training of activists, Officers and members, including maintaining a relationship with regional offices to inform training needs, on the relevant law
