Sellick Partnership are delighted to be working closely with the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham to recruit a permanent Senior Safeguarding Lawyer to their dynamic team.

Over the past four years, the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham have gone through an ambitious Transformation Programme and have built a new kind of council, capable of delivering real change for the community in the twenty-first century. Although a lot of improvements have been made, resulting in the council winning the LGC Driving Growth award as well as LGC Entrepreneurial Council of the Year 2019, there is still more to deliver. Over the coming years the council will consolidate the progress they have already made and use the new kind of council to empower residents to live longer, healthier, happier and more independent lives.

The council are seeking an experienced Senior Lawyer to manage the Safeguarding Team. The team consists of Childcare Lawyers, Childcare Legal Assistants, Adult Social Care Lawyers and an Education Lawyer; 11 members in total. You will have direct line management of 7-9 of the team members.

Alongside your management responsibilities, you will handle a mixed caseload of Adult Social Care and Childcare matters. This will be a fairly even split between the two areas.

The successful Senior Safeguarding Lawyer will report into the Deputy Head of Legal and will be responsible for the delivery of proactive legal advice and decisions on complex and contentious casework in the area of Safeguarding within the Barking and Dagenham Legal Practice.

The hiring managers will consider qualified solicitors, barristers or equivalent (e.g. FILEX) and will consider both Public Sector and Private Practice candidates, as long as relevant experience is demonstrated.

You will handle a mixed caseload of the following matters:

  • Adult Social Care:
    • Community Care
    • Court of Protection
    • Deprivation of Liberty
    • NRPF
    • Judicial Reviews
    • Ordinary residence matters
    • Adult mental health work
  • Childcare:
    • Managing pre-proceedings and a busy caseload of care matters
    • Acting as a Legal advisor to a wide range of clients across the Social Care functions within the council
    • Emergency protection orders
    • Exclusion orders
    • Non-accidental injury
    • PLO files
    • Advocacy

In return, the council is offering a competitive salary of £44,607 to £57,735 (depending on experience) and the following benefits:

The role will be conducted remotely for the foreseeable future and there will be ample home-working provided once offices reopen, allowing for candidates to be considered who do not necessarily reside locally. The council have attractive and spacious offices based in the Town Hall, which is a short 5-minute walk from Barking station.
