Planning and Litigation Lawyer

Salary: £31,347 - £41,881

Sellick Partnership are currently recruiting for an experienced planning and litigation lawyer to join the shared legal service of two local authorities in Hampshire. The successful planning and litigation lawyer will join a cohesive, supportive and experienced local authority legal team, providing comprehensive advice on key legal risks associated with the councils' planning matters and court cases. This is an exciting time to join these authorities as they plan a number of major projects and develop new models to deliver essential services. A working pattern of 4 or 5 days per week will be considered.

Duties of the planning and litigation lawyer include:

Litigation

  • Conducting civil and or criminal litigation in the County and Magistrates' Courts
  • Advise on licensing and planning enforcement including section 146 forfeiture proceedings
  • Landlord and tenant disputes arising out of non-payment of rent together
  • Issuing fast or multi-track claims
  • The successful candidate will also need to prepare debt recovery cases including issuing claims, drafting witness statements, settlement agreements and applications to the County Court.

Planning

  • Dealing with the full range of work in respect of development management, planning policy, planning committees, enforcements, court challenges and appeals including advocacy

Person specification:

  • You will be a qualified solicitor, barrister of legal executive
  • Ability to work on your own initiative and give advice on a wide range of legal issues
  • Ideally have previous local government experience although this is not essential
  • Particular subject expertise in non-contentious planning law
  • Ability to manage a demanding workload and expectations
  • Ability to negotiate well
  • Commercial awareness
  • Ability to attend committee meetings to advise accordingly
  • Ability to build strong relationships with senior management and Members alike
  • Good oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work with initiative and a flexible and responsible approach
  • Keyboard skills and knowledge of IT
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel between sites and other locations
