About the Role:
An opportunity has arisen for a Policy Lawyer to join the Government Legal Department for a minimum of 7 months. The successful candidate will be a qualified legal professional (Solicitor, Barrister or equivalent) and be able to demonstrate policy drafting and public law experience. The posts will advise on the European Programmes and the appointee, while based in London, will be allocated to one of the regional offices as their lead lawyer and will be expected to develop that relationship by visiting and providing training. This work is operational in nature, fast-paced and can require negotiation to manage demand at pressure points where deadlines are approaching. There is scope to adjust other work areas according to skills, but the main areas of legal expertise will relate to state aid, procurement and grant funding alongside general public law. There may be an opportunity to assist in the design of the UKSPF from the early stages, or to get involved in broader policy issues around integration and cohesion policy. This work is intellectually demanding and requires creativity and very good analytical skills. The posts would provide experience of advising (including drafting funding agreements and) and engagement with senior officials and departmental boards. Some involvement in working with litigation colleagues in defending claims is likely.
The ideal Candidate for this Policy Lawyer role will have:
- Qualified legal professional (Solicitor, Barrister or equivalent)
- Sound understanding of public law
- Proactively manage risks and identify solutions
- The ability to think strategically and creatively, see legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly
- Sound understanding of commercial law, including in particular public procurement and state aid
- Reliable legal judgment and appreciation of legal risk
- An understanding of the role of lawyers in Government
- £34-£44 per hour
- Minimum 7 month contract
- Working from home followed by flexible working arrangements
