My client is a local authority based in the West Midlands. They are seeking an experienced Principal Solicitor (or equivalent) to join their legal services team on an interim basis. This role is ideal for an experienced lawyer with significant experience managing sizable teams to take the next step in their career.

The successful candidate will work within the Legal and Governance directorate. We are looking for highly experienced candidates who will be able to work with the Head of Legal and elected members, as well as support and assist the Senior Management Team. The work is varied, but a demonstrable track record managing lawyers in previous roles is essential.

Day to day tasks will include:

  • To manage and supervise the team responsible for legal work relating to all work covered by the team, including property, contracts and procurement, CPO, Highways, planning, right to buy, employment law, prosecutions, licensing, possessions, civil litigation, housing, ASB.
  • To supervise and monitor the conduct of cases and work undertaken within the team.
  • To provide leadership, motivation and direction to all team members.
  • To manage the budget of the team in accordance with the Council's agreed priorities, financial regulations and accounting instructions.
  • To play a constructive and active role in the management, in the Legal Services Management Team and in the preparation and implementation of the service plans and the vision 2030.
  • To ensure the effective delivery of legal services by the team in accordance with any Service Level Agreements, the requirement of clients and performance indicators.
  • To provide professional advice at the highest level to the Council and its committees, members and at meetings including the writing of reports.
  • To play a leading part in developing and maintaining corporate objectives and policies and to contribute significantly to recommendations to change major procedures or departmental policy.
  • To undertake responsibility for the development and management of close working relationships with client services areas and members.
  • To develop, facilitate and deliver training and maximise income generation opportunities for the department.
  • To manage the training of any Trainee Solicitor and apprentice in the department to ensure they are trained in accordance with the Law Society regulations.
  • To undertake advice and actions which affect other services and in some cases the Council as a whole.
  • To negotiate complex and/or politically sensitive agreements and issues on behalf of the Council and contribute to the corporate resolution of a variety of strategic issues working closely with members and officers at the highest level.
  • To carry out such legal work as may be required by the Head of Service or by the needs of the service, in particular work which is of a complex or involved nature.
  • To actively participate in the Council's Quality Policies and Procedures.
  • To participate in the operation of the Council's Personal Performance Development Scheme.
