Sellick Partnership has been engaged to recruit a Senior Finance Manager for a highly successful and instantly recognisable retail business based in Manchester City Centre.


This position/team plays a critical role in their growth transformation with specific focus around the financial understanding to implement this strategy. You will be looking at strategic decisions presented by the group and appraising these based on certain factors. You will work closely with the wider business to understand and explain the viability of business direction. This will include business partnering to manage their expectations in relation to the actual outcome of each and every investment proposal (c£300m per annum capital budget).


As a senior finance manager, you will lead a team to provide support and commercial advice on new store acquisitions and other capital projects. With a keen eye for detail, you will critically evaluate and challenge investment proposals and business cases to ensure the highest standard at all times. In this role, you will support the business in end-to-end decision making. You will partner with colleagues across commercial, retail operations, logistics, and marketing assessing the profitability of strategic investment decisions. The role requires a self-motivated and focused person who will quickly establish themselves as a key contact challenging the status quo and striving for best practice.


We are looking for a versatile individual who is able to liaise with both finance and non-finance stakeholders to gather the information they require to correctly appraise projects. Building a wider communication network would offer you an unprecedented opportunity to see the business at a higher level.


Key Responsibilities

  • challenge investment decisions at executive level
  • influence and challenge senior partners in the property team to understand where best to invest
  • understand how the capital investment programme supports the strategic goals and ensure those goals are delivered
  • continually review and develop the current governance process and appraisal techniques
  • develop advanced modelling techniques using robust financial analysis
  • create new tools and insight to improve the quality and pace of appraisals
  • provide a platform to enhance cross functional working, applying best practice across finance
  • lead, guide and direct a high performing team


The Person

The successful applicant will be a proactive, fully qualified Accountant (ACA, ICAS, ACCA or CIMA) with extensive experience within a similar role where you have reinvented / reengineered processes from a transactional level to a strategic one.


You will have experience in building successful working relationships with partners and senior leaders, confidence in presenting insight to different audiences and have proven leadership qualities in motivating a team of talented and skilled professionals.


Ideally you will have experience of investment appraisals, however, if you show a strong commercial acumen coupled with a finance background we would love to hear from you.

You will have a high level of analytical skills with a real ability to translate numbers and complex data sets into meaningful insight coupled with an inquisitive nature with a real ability to engage, challenge and influence colleagues at all levels. You will have confidence presenting your findings to different audiences and senior leaders.


You will have a creative and innovative approach to problem solving and analysis; delivery orientated - able to work in pressurised environments, meet multiple deadlines and manage own priorities.


You will also be able to demonstrate business acumen and ability to gain knowledge across the breadth of a variety of functions. Good communication skills - able to translate financial information and create successful business relationships. You will also be able to take a 'big picture' view with demonstrable internal consultancy and influencing skills, while possessing a keen eye for the detail.
