Contract - Full-time

Litigation Lawyer required to join the Solicitor's Office and Legal Operations Directorate of HMRC. The successful solicitor or barrister will be responsible for the department's complex and high value litigation relating to indirect taxes and duties

The successful lawyer will be responsible for their own caseload in a busy team dealing tax appeals in the First Tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber), Upper Tribunal and Court of Appeal as well as claims in the Administrative Court for Judicial Review. In the indirect tax cases there is a strong European element. The appeals arise when an officer of HMRC makes a decision about VAT and the decision is appealed to the Tax Tribunal or challenge sought by way of Judicial Review. The work may also include cases arising from civil action taken in response to suspected fraud or can involve consideration of human rights issues in the tax arena. Our key stakeholders are HMRC officers working in policy, technical and operational teams. The work can be document heavy and the majority of appeals do proceed to hearing. Cases are required to be kept in Lexcel compliant order with all litigation and internal deadlines met.
