Katherine Johnson │ Trainee Management Accountant

Describe your working day

Each day varies as I have a number of different tasks to complete. At the start of each day I review what needs to be completed and check my e-mails, then I can prioritise what is required.  My main role is to keep the purchase ledger up to date, ensuring that invoices are processed and paid according to our payment terms. Month end can be quite busy as I assist our financial controller in preparing the management accounts.

Why did you join Sellick Partnership?

Everyone I met during the interview process was friendly and had great things to say about Sellick Partnership. The role available gave the opportunity to learn a lot and study for my Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) qualification.

How did the opportunity for to you to become CIMA qualified arise?

It was discussed in my interview as something that would be available. After settling into my role in the team and gaining experience in finance I started the qualification.

How have you found studying for your CIMA?

The amount of time and work that you need to ensure you do well has definitely been challenging. Three hour evening classes after a full day at work make for a very long day! However, I have been supported by my managers and have been able to ask questions about what I have been studying. It is also great to be able to apply what I have learnt in a real business situation.

What would be your advice be to anyone considering undertaking a CIMA qualification?

Firstly make sure it is the qualification for you – I chose CIMA because it covers a wide range of material, and I will be able to understand how management accounting can be used within a business.

Carefully consider how much work you can put in, and when you will work best – whether that is evening or weekend classes. Make sure it is manageable as you don’t want to take on too much and end up struggling with either work or study.

How do you feel you have progressed within Sellick Partnership?

I started helping in the payroll department and raising sales invoices, I then took on more responsibility within payroll, and after two years I moved on to look after the purchase ledger. I feel that I have had a variety of experience within the department so far and look forward to more.

What other training have you received?

I can run payroll for both PAYE and Limited Company contractors. I have also received training on our accounts software and Excel, including VLOOKUPs and pivot tables.

Why do you see your future being at Sellick Partnership?

In a company that is growing as quickly as Sellick Partnership there will always be further opportunities to learn and take on new responsibilities. I also really enjoy working with my team.

Describe the culture of Sellick Partnership in three words.

Exciting, hard-working, committed
