Managing work-life balance



Combine a competitive jobs market with the rise of technology that can connect us to our desks within a matter of minutes and it’s hardly surprising some people find it difficult to find a work-life balance.

However challenging it may be, it’s something we all seem to want – the desire for large pay packets and bonus schemes is declining as annual leave allowance and the opportunity for flexible working become the most sought after benefits by job seekers.

If you are struggling to find your balance, or simply want to improve on what you already have, consider the following points;

Switch off!

It can often be our phones and computers to blame for keeping us working outside of our contracted hours, so make sure you set yourself a period of time away from these devices. Whether it’s for two hours a night or the entirety of a weekend, this will not only help you to wind down and relax mentally, but will remind your friends and family that you are committed to life away from your desk.

Tick tock

We all only have 24 hours in each day, so don’t fret too much if you can’t cram everything in – and always avoid taking too much work home. It’s a great sign to your employer that you are willing to go the extra mile to meet your deadlines, but it’s sometimes better to walk away and return to the task the following day with a clear mind.

Employment matters

No two employers are the same, so make sure that when you are looking for a position that you take into account the visions and values of the company; do they promote flexible working and offer childcare vouchers, or do they assume overtime and weekend working as a given? Make sure you are comfortable with what a company expects of you before accepting a role.

Most of all, know what you want!

A work-life balance means different things to different people; you might want to be able to pop into work at a weekend and have the freedom to work in the evenings, but equally you might desire more time with your family or children. It’s only once you decide upon this that you will be able to achieve a healthy balance and something that works for you.
