AAT and Sellick Partnership

Myself and my colleague Kathryn Beal were recently asked to speak at an AAT conference for 120 part qualified graduates, presenting on CVs and interview techniques.

Initially we wondered how we'd get enough material on the two topics to fill a one hour timeslot - we needn't have been worried. As the presentation took shape, it quickly became apparent that when it comes to both CVs and interviews, preparation is key.

We covered a variety of points during our presentation, including;

CV Preparation

  • How to structure your CV to best sell your skills and experience to potential employers
  • Things a candidate should and shouldn't include in their CV
  • The impact of LinkedIn and Facebook, the importance of having a presence on social media channels, and presenting these correctly on your CV.

Interview Technique

  • How to prepare for an interview - knowing about the company and the role you are interviewing for
  • How you should present yourself in any interview scenario
  • Relating your CV to the job description given and connecting your answers to past work place experiences
  • How to conquer competency based questions
  • Strong questions to ask at the end of an interview to leave a lasting impression.

By the end of the session, all of the delegates were more aware of what employers are looking for from them when presenting themselves either in a formal interview or on paper.

A candidate can never underestimate the importance of selling themselves in a positive way; if they don't, the competition will beat them to a job offer every time.
