Motivation for change

As recruiters we always want to know the reason behind why someone wants to make a move from their current position. It is a question we ask daily and is considered as part of understanding the 'basics.' We want to understand someone's motivation behind their choice in making a move and to appreciate what events have led to this decision.

Changing roles in the permanent market can be a big milestone for some and is not something to be taken lightly. In this case, we expect that someone should have put substantial thought and time into their reasoning behind changing roles, to have considered all other options, to have a clear idea on where they want to go in their career and what they aim to gain from making such a large leap.

There are a number of valid reasons as to why someone may choose to move permanent positions including an increase in opportunities or avenues, an increased awareness of new vacancies and the lure of a more lucrative career in contracting. These variables beg the question - has the reason to move become less significant or is it just changing due to shifts in the market?

As more and more individuals search passively and the flattery of being the object of headhunting has become more common place, I believe it to be the latter. A frequent expression candidates often present is the idea of looking for a 'new challenge,' whatever that may be, and the idea that if something better comes along, then why listen to what is on offer?

As the economy begins to stabilise, individuals are feeling less pressure to stay in one role and are becoming more open to temptation to see if the grass truly is greener on the other side, and less emphasis is being placed on loyalty to a business.

With job vacancies increasing by 19% compared to the run up to the election more of us are becoming intrigued by what could sway us to leave. It seems that one's motivation is less about any frustrations or negativity that previously would have been common, and is being replaced by reasoning around what gains are to be had and how we can better ourselves. Therefore, to some this could be considered to be better reasoning, and a more positive justification for wanting to leave a role. It could be suggested that this is what society needs and is the way forward for us all. However, what does that mean for employers? As the market becomes more candidate driven and competition ever increasing, does this  mean less stability for a business as individuals are less likely to stay?
