Sellick Partnership present to Leeds University Careers Centre

Just before Christmas 2014, myself and Jacqui Musson were asked to present a talk to a group of students from Leeds University as part of their Careers Centre seminars. Being experienced recruiters: they thought a suitable topic would be around telephone interviews; what to expect, how to prepare and any further advice we could give.

A group of around 40 students greeted us warmly and promptly, both the final year soon-to-graduates and the first and second years preparing for the assessments and interviews awaiting them for sandwich years and vacation placements.

Our presentation was split into a number of sections including:
  • How should you position yourself
  • Timing is everything
  • What you MUST know
  • Questions to prepare to answer each and every time
  • How to answer competency based questions
  • Be prepared to sell yourself
  • Close them down!
  • Final hints and tips
We also split the groups into teams to practice answering some of the questions they may get asked… and to give us a well deserved rest from speaking. The students were happy to chip in and asked some very intelligent questions, which allowed us to cover a wider range of topics than we had originally planned.

Now both of us had been to university over a decade ago (sorry Jacqui..) and boy have things changed! This type of careers guidance and assistance had not been available to either of us before we graduated, or at least it wasn't very well promoted.

The Leeds University Careers Centre seem to be incredibly proactive in assisting their students realise their potential post university and the students themselves seem to realise its an incredible competitive jobs market for graduates so they need to be hot off the mark to secure the best jobs.
As you can tell, we were impressed. A number of the students followed up after the seminar with LinkedIn requests and contact information; and we will definitely keep them in mind for our graduate and intern roles available in 2015.

If you would like a copy of the presentation, or if you require any advice about any telephone interviews you may have coming up, please give Amy Bullock a call on 0113 243 9775 or email
