The Christmas Job Search

As you are all aware from the lights, to the markets, to the John Lewis and Coco-Cola advert, Christmas is fast approaching!

Talk everywhere turns to the holidays, with many offices and organisations tending to close down over the festive period. You would think this means you can slow down on the job hunt right? Well then you would be wrong! Within recruitment, there is an assumption that the job market slows down towards Christmas and picks up again in the New Year, however this is a common misconception, with the run up to the end of the year being an incredibly busy time for us.

A lot of the team here like to take the Christmas period as annual leave, but I work this period every year and can testify to the fact that each year we are inundated with  new requirements for locum legal professionals. Clients are keen to get new locums in place for the New Year, with a lot of public sector organisations looking to make use of their budget before the end of the financial year.  This provides an excellent opportunity to appoint a locum, and make some headway with a project, or clear a backlog of work.

Candidates often tend to put their job search on hold at this time of year, preferring to pick it up again in the New Year - my advice would be to persevere and up the search. It is an opportune time for you to stay ahead of your competition by not taking your foot of the pedal, whilst others are relaxing in the run up to Christmas. What is important to note is that whilst many clients will be on annual leave at some point over the festive period, they will have left the requirement with their consultant who will be in the office working away at a shortlist.

My advice would be to:

1. Keep an eye on job boards for the latest and most up to date vacancies

2. Register with a specialist agency like Sellick Partnership! We have the network and contacts that means we have the best opportunities on the market

3. Join relevant groups on LinkedIn to stay informed - Sellick Partnership have a specialist group called Legal Locums in the UK - here you will find up to date information on the market and roles available at the moment

4. Lastly - BE PROACTIVE! Whilst other job seekers are taking a break, it is a good opportunity for you to plan for the New Year to make sure you're ahead of the game
