Solicitor jobs

Once qualified, solicitors often specialise in one legal area such as family, litigation, property or tax. Solicitors working in commercial law firms advise large corporate clients on transactions or cases. They might draft the contracts for the construction of a new shopping centre or advise on the merger of one FTSE 100 company with another.

High street solicitors advise smaller companies and individuals on legal matters such as writing wills, property conveyancing, custody cases, divorce settlements and so on.

  • Giving legal advice
  • Researching cases and legislation
  • Drafting legal documents
  • Liaising with clients and other professionals such as barristers
  • Representing clients in court
  • Advise a client on the law and legal issues relating to their case
  • Draft documents, letters and contracts tailored to the client's individual needs

Sellick Partnership concentrate on the following core areas in which you can specialise:

  • Residential property
  • Commercial property
  • Family law
  • Litigation

What skills do you need to be a solicitor?
The experience required to enter into a role as a solicitor is dependent on the type of organisation, and the qualifications a candidate has. Many firms offer training that can be completed while you are in the role.

  • Ability to make important decisions quickly.
  • Communicating well, both orally and in writing
  • Problem-solving
  • Analytical skills.

  • Qualified solicitor

  • Experience of managing a caseload of public cases under minimum supervision
  • Experience of conducting advocacy (where applicable)
  • Any previous experience of attending public law outline of legal planning meetings would be highly beneficial.

The qualifications required to be a solicitor will depend on the organisation that is hiring, and the specific duties the candidate will be expected to carry out. Commonly, candidates will become a solicitor through studying law at university, before taking the Legal Practice Course (LPC). However, this is not restricted to all legal professionals, some may study a non-law degree, then take the Common Professional Examination, or the Graduate Diploma in Law conversion course before doing the LPC.

Alternatively you would need to complete a training contract to qualify as a solicitor or qualify as a legal executive through the Cilex route.

  • Strong dedication to their work
  • Great communication skills
  • Good judgement
  • An analytical mind

Working hours/benefits many organisations offer

Long working hours are common. During busy periods you will be expected to work 12-hour days and weekend work may be occasionally required. Solicitors in the largest City firms tend to work unsocial and longer hours on a more regular basis.
