Overview of the Public Inquiry position:

Sellick Partnership is delighted to be working with a well-known central government organisation to recruit a Public Inquiry Lawyer into their busy legal team. My client is involved in a number of high-profile public inquiries and reviews. The role offers an excellent opportunity to work in a unique area which deals with high-profile matters that consider events of serious public concern. The team provides legal advice and support to government departments on a wide range of inquiry related matters including offering support to individuals who participate in inquiries e.g. civil servants and Ministers with reparation of their evidence and witness support and dealing with disclosure requests. We also resource many inquiry legal teams and lawyers will assist the Secretary and Chair in fulfilling the inquiry's objectives.

The post holder should be able to do the following:

  • Manage their own workload (including meeting tight deadlines to preserve the company reputation).
  • Assist with the team's knowledge management/sharing objectives (also providing input into client legal awareness projects).
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings.
  • Comply with Lexcel requirements, as well as policies, standards, procedures and service level agreements.
  • Display the Civil Service Values.
  • Keep abreast of legal developments and current thinking on related issues and use training and other methods to refresh and improve their skills and knowledge.

Following an induction period, the successful candidate will be expected to do the following:

  • Take responsibility for their own workload subject to supervision (but knowing when to consult and delegate).
  • Use a process of analysis, planning, scheduling, prioritising, action, quality monitoring and review.
  • Keep files accurately and comprehensively updated on the case management system (and, in some cases, on paper files).
  • Display an understanding of the context in which the client operates.
  • Display the professional attitude that the client expects from a member of an organisation with a high reputation.
  • Providing effective client care and managing all aspects of the client relationship for each allocated case appreciating the particular commercial, political and policy context.
  • The successful candidate should be seen to be working effectively with clients (adopting a style most likely to build effective working relationships with clients.
  • Responding to reasonable client requests including agreeing achievable and realistic actions, timescales etc.
  • Acknowledging client concerns and working to alleviate these in a way that balances client and organisational needs.
  • Being alert to media interest which may have an impact on the reputation of the client and/or organisation) as well as with colleagues and be displaying a positive and helpful attitude in the conduct of their work.

Requirements of the Public Inquiry Lawyer will include:

  • Must have been in the UK for the past 5 years due to Security Clearance required (desirable).
  • Minimum of 2 years Post-Qualified Experience.
  • Previous experience of public inquiries/reviews and/or litigation (ideally public law litigation) is essential.
  • You must be able to demonstrate good written skills (including close attention to detail) and an ability to work independently and under pressure.

The post is likely to involve carrying out extensive disclosure exercises, drafting witness statements, providing detailed written legal advice and conducting litigation relating to public inquiries/reviews.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well-established Central Government team that prides itself in the first-class service it offers to clients.
