Working in Manchester and the surrounding area

Manchester has been described as ‘a city of many accents’ – a multicultural magnet for students and professionals keen to experience its professional opportunities, independent spirit and cultural wealth.

The Manchester area accounts for seven per cent of all financial services output in the UK, with firms in the city showing expertise in several fast-growing areas including venture capital investment, public-private partnerships and private wealth management. Over 60 banks have operations in Manchester, employing over 60,000 people and ensuring the regional's position as the largest corporate finance and stock broking centre in England outside of London. Key employers in the region include BNY Mellon, Cooperative Financial Services, Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays.

As well as being a financial hub, Manchester shines within the legal sector - particularly within the fields of maritime and environmental law. With the highest number of practices within the major regional cities, Manchester is one of the largest legal centres in the UK after London with a high proportion of the top 100 law firms including Eversheds, Addleshaw Goddard and DLA Piper.

Competitive business costs have created a robust economy, with businesses based in Manchester benefiting from a highly competitive cost-base when compared to London and other European capitals.  As well as shining in the finance and legal sectors, the BBC's decision to relocate to Salford Mediacity confirms Manchester's position as an increasingly influential British media hub – a true centre of innovation and technology.
