Overview of the Senior Housing Lawyer position

Sellick Partnership is currently recruiting for a Senior Housing Lawyer to join a busy but friendly London Borough Council. Our client is looking for an experienced Housing Lawyer who has extensive experience dealing with disrepair cases ideally from local authority but candidates with transferrable skills from private practice are encouraged to apply. This opportunity is on a hybrid working basis, with a mandatory 2 day office presence required per week, encouraging employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance. This role is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and ambitious housing lawyer, who is looking to progress further with additional management opportunities. This is a really interesting opportunity to work in a busy legal team that is bringing all of their housing work back inhouse.

Key responsibilities of the Senior Housing Lawyer

  • As the Senior Housing Lawyer, you will be assisting the Principal Lawyer with management of the team as well as carrying a caseload of mainly disrepair cases.
  • Deputising for the Principal Lawyer as required.
  • Undertake a caseload of more complex housing litigation and advisory work - the majority of the casework is disrepair and statutory nuisance.
  • Act as a legal advisor to Members and Officers in connection with procedures or matters arising from the Committees attended and participate in the formulation of policy proposals for presentation to Committees.
  • Deal with Ombudsman cases.
  • Introduce new procedures, as required, arising from new legislation, and improvements in efficiency.

Experience/qualifications required for the Senior Housing Lawyer position

  • In the role of Senior Housing Lawyer, you must be a qualified Lawyer (Solicitor or Barrister) with at least 5 years PQE and a current practicing certificate.
  • Able to work on a hybrid basis with two days per week required in the office, this role requires someone who is able to work full-time.
  • You must have experience in housing law and housing litigation, any sector will be considered but previous local authority experience is advantageous.
  • Recent supervision/management experience would be ideal but our client is happy to consider candidates wanting to progress in their career.
  • Strong experience with disrepair claims and statutory nuisance cases.
