Salary: £51,356 - £54,495 (Band 11) plus market supplement of £3,220 pro rata

Location: Trafford Town Hall, Manchester, M32 0TH - hybrid working

Contract: Permanent

Working arrangements: Full time (36.25 hours)

Overview of the Senior Lawyer role

Sellick Partnership is excited to be partnering with Trafford Council who are currently looking for an experienced Senior Lawyer to join their busy Corporate Team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a passionate Senior Lawyer who is willing to join a lively, prosperous local authority in a friendly environment where your personal and professional development will be encourage as a valued member of the Legal and Governance senior management team.

The successful candidate will primarily manage a specialist team focused on local government/public administration law, information governance, data protection, FOI, and Environmental Information Regulations.

Key responsibilities of the Senior Lawyer will include

  • Whilst a large proportion of the role will involve data protection, complaints and local government matters, the Corporate Team sits alongside a Litigation Legal Team and covers wide and vast areas of law, providing the postholder with an opportunity to learn and develop new skills and expertise in the following areas:
    • Local Government Law
    • Data Protection
    • Criminal and Civil Litigation
    • Licensing Law and public protection
    • Employment Law
    • Regulatory enforcement, including prosecutions in relation to Environmental Health, Health and Safety at Work, Licensing, Planning and Trading Standards
    • Anti-social behaviour and community safety
    • Debt recovery
    • Inquests
    • Planning

Required experience/qualifications of the Senior Lawyer position will include

  • You will be a qualified solicitor, barrister, or Chartered Lawyer / Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives holding a current practising certificate.
  • You will have knowledge and experience of leading a successful expert team and of working in one or more of the legal areas covered by this team.
  • You will demonstrate relevant experience and expertise in one or more of the areas listed above and will be capable of:
    • Developing and advising on a wide range of high-level complex and sensitive work
    • Representing Legal Services team at committee meetings and also representing the council's interests with external organisations
    • Supporting the Principal Solicitors, Monitoring Officer and Deputy Monitoring Officer as required
    • Possessing up-to-date knowledge in respect of national trends, policy, legislation, guidelines, initiatives and best practice in Legal and Local Government
    • Ensuring that the service meets all its statutory requirements and responsibilities
    • Communicating and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, building partnerships and productive working relationships to achieve shared objectives
  • Whilst experience working in a local authority environment is not essential, you must demonstrate an understanding of the political environment within which you would be operating
