Hourly rate: £60-£65 umbrella

Hours: 35 per week (additional hours subject to prior approval by Head of Legal)

Duration: Minimum 6 months

Our large local authority is seeking an additional Commercial Lawyer to join their in-house team. This locum lawyer's role will include providing legal advice and support for the delivery of the Integrated Settlement Fund (ISF) and associated legal outputs. The position is critical to ensuring compliance with statutory obligations while fostering collaborative relationships that deliver positive outcomes for the Council.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate funding and legal agreements.
  • Advise on statutory and regulatory compliance, including procurement, governance, and safeguarding obligations.
  • Ensure legal arrangements protect the Council's commercial, financial, and legal interests.
  • Support risk management by identifying and mitigating potential legal and financial exposure.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders and external partners (including the Combined Authority and other local authorities) to ensure timely and compliant delivery of ISF objectives.

Candidate Requirements:

Qualified solicitor or barrister with strong experience in local government law.

Expertise in public sector procurement, funding arrangements, partnerships, contracts, and governance.

Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with a proactive and positive approach.

Ability to manage complex legal matters under tight deadlines while maintaining a solution-focused mindset.

The use of the legal case management system is essential, and all time worked must be recorded.
