Was, Were, Where - all three have different meanings, but travel around the cities and that soon goes out the window
Sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it's not in our diverse office - with accents coming from Ireland, Scotland, Stoke, Derby, London and Nottingham (or as I say not'num) - with an office of fast talkers, we often say one thing to be greeted with looks of confusion!
Regional accents don't just change the way things are pronounced, but also the words that are actually used! Just some of words that cause confusion in our office are mardy, cob, ossess, whenever, bonny, to name just a few.
Of course we all have our own sayings as well, but it does make you realise that you have to be mindful of what you say and how you say it. This is even more imperative if you work in a client or customer facing role. Being a Nottingham lass working a Staffordshire patch can have its entertaining moments; and don't get me started on the Derby/Nottingham divide!
In an interview candidates will of course be judged on their appearance and manner, and this can include their accent - I read that the Birmingham accent that was voted as the worst accent in the country!
Don't miss out on that role you really want and practice your answers out loud, its important to remember to speak clearly, coherently, and most of all professionally. You could even record yourself, to make sure that you are getting your point across in the best way possible.
Has your accent ever affected your career? Let me know, and make sure you read our candidate resources to ensure you are fully prepared to get the job you want!
